Almost Rollin'

This trip has been a long time in the dreaming. The first draft is over 30 years old and starred me, my schoolmate Tim and a second-hand Mini Moke. The plot was pretty thin. A lap around Australia, via any roads that took our fancy. This dream kept us going through our final year, but after the exams reality intervened, Tim decided he had to get on with his life, and the project fell through.

The second draft followed about 5 years later. It was a quick re-write, with a new co-star, my dog Ned, a red brumby ute, and a similarly vague itinerary. This time it was a girl that intervened and once again the project fell through.

So now, after many years, its time for the third draft. This time it's different. No more low budget productions, this one is mega. Completely rewritten and featuring a family of four, a bloody big 4WD, an off-road trailer, and tonnes of the latest gear. But the biggest difference is that this time we are actually going to make it into production. We roll in just 3 weeks time.

So here's the executive summary:
  • Four people, Ninety days, One country;
  • Clockwise from the East Coast;
  • Over the Ranges, across the Murray-Darling Basin, through South Australia, across the Nullabor, up to the Pilbara on to the Kimberly, down through the Tanami Desert to the MacDonnell ranges and Uluru, across the Simpson Desert and Channel Country, then through the Darling Downs and back across the Ranges to home.
the plan

We'll see ya when the dust settles.

    1. oh this is NOT a good start, the FONT! oh dear...good luck with that! I have an issue with the BLAME! I get the blame for the first trip failing?! it was going to be a kombi not a moke (which wouldn't get to he end of the street) and it was FUNDS not me getting on with my life (evidence? exam result = F)

    3. look, youve been told many time the font is BAD...yet you persist! you dont want this story to read ... the fourth time I tried the trip around oz it was prevented due to a disagreement over the font on the blog. mind you the reasons/excuses get pretty skinny each time.
      I LIKE the font (oops thats done it now!).

  3. do you have those nice shiny red shoes as part of your gear - mandatory equipment considering you're following the Oz version of a coloured road ...
    so how long / short have you given yourselves? if you're not back by this Christmas, or next Christmas, we'll drop in anyway!! who's resp for the home schooling?! what's the tent like? will you have hot water for the showers? i like the font. it looked like the point of a feather dipped in tar ... who will look after the chooks? (i know a sydney girl, 2nd yr nursing who would love to house sit ... getting to uni from Kempsey way to Sy'ney each day could pose a slight hurdle... have fun and never dive into a billabong.

  5. What? no plans to zip down and up the Canning while you are out there. Just turn left at Halls Creek then a simple 4012km round trip...easy :)

    1. Just realised my mistake, you are going round the other way. you would need to turn right at Halls Creek.... i would not want you to get lost following my instructions :) :)

    2. you were right the first time - we are heading south from the Gibb River Rd so it is left just after Halls Creek. However we will then be turning left again at Billiluna and heading down the Tanami Track. This seems a better option with a family.

      And the thought of asking you for directions never crossed my mind :)

  7. Actually I almost was brought up as a Catholic but at the last minute I was abducted by a radical band of atheists called the Jesuits.
